MASTERING THE MODE
From the basics to word problems. Read the lesson carefully, then take the 5-item seatwork at the bottom!
The MODE is the number that appears the most times in a set of numbers. It is the easiest measure to find — just look for the number that shows up most often!
A set can have one mode, more than one mode (bimodal), or no mode at all (if every number appears only once).
Tip: You do NOT need to arrange the numbers in order to find the mode. Just count which number appears the most!
COUNT
Count how many times each number appears
PICK THE MOST
The number with the highest count is the MODE
Numbers: 4, 7, 4, 2, 7, 4
Count: 4 appears 3 times, 7 appears 2 times, 2 appears 1 time
The number that appears most is 4
So the MODE is 4!
Numbers: 3, 6, 3, 6, 9
Count: 3 appears 2 times, 6 appears 2 times, 9 appears 1 time
Both 3 and 6 appear the most (tied!)
So the MODES are 3 and 6!
Scenario: A shoe store sells the following shoe sizes in one day: 5, 6, 6, 7, 8, 6, 7. What is the mode of the shoe sizes sold? (This helps the store know which size to restock!)
1. Count how many times each size appears:
- Size 5: 1 time
- Size 6: 3 times
- Size 7: 2 times
- Size 8: 1 time
2. The size that appears the most is 6 (3 times).
The mode shoe size is 6.
Scenario: What is the mode of this set of numbers: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50?
1. Count how many times each number appears.
2. Each number (10, 20, 30, 40, 50) appears exactly 1 time.
3. Because no number repeats more than the others, there is no mode.
The answer is No Mode.
